A Week of June-ness 2018: A Mulie week in London (part 3)

Evening all!

Today is the third and final part of A Mulie week in London. It's been an eventful week for Mulie so far, so let's dive straight back into the action...

Thursday 14th
Today was the most important day of the whole trip- the reason we came to London during this week in the first place- Rib Day! If you read last year's installment of A Week of June-ness, you will know that 14th June is the birthday of Hard Rock Cafe and to celebrate, they like to treat us all to their food at 1970's prices. So having experienced 80p ribs last year, 2018 was going to follow suit for us. We would line up and get stuck into delicious cheap ribs and have a look around the Hard Rock museum while we were there.

However, as you read yesterday, Matthew wasn't very well during the small hours of Thursday morning, and I was arm-deep in sick myself, so unsurprisingly when Thursday morning came round, neither of us were feeling great, let alone feeling ready to eat. Eating was the last thing on Matthew's mind anyway- I was just tired. So with the events of the early hours still haunting us still, we decided we would have to give Rib Day a miss. Instead we lounged in bed napping/feeling sorry for ourselves until midday.

It was this time when we knew we needed to head out. Staying in all day wasn't going to do us any favours no matter how we felt, so we decided to venture out to the cinema to finally watch Avengers: Infinity War. We were only a couple of weeks late for the Avengers boat, but we were finally there at the Picture house, feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed! Just kidding- we felt none of those things. But the room was dark and the film was meant to be good and I was looking forward to finally seeing this film.

I don't know whether it was the fact I was feeling tired or whether it just was the film, but I wasn't that impressed. I guess I'd made it all up to be bigger in my head and that's why I felt so disappointed but as the credits rolled I just thought 'Oh...' Ok, so there will be a sequel, but the whole film was gearing up to one ending and then just ended quite abruptly for me and in the opposite way that I would've expected. I was glad I finally got to see the film though, and it was good for us to both get out of the apartment. After the film we headed back to the apartment and watched TV hoping that Matthew felt better and that we would get a full night sleep.

Friday 15th
Today we both felt a little better. I was still a bit over-tired and Matthew still feeling a little sensitive, but all in all we felt a lot better than the day before. Today we chose to go to HMS Belfast to have a poke around. As we arrived, I was struck at how big it actually was. I'd seen it at a glance, but up close it was a beast of a thing. This battle ship had seen it all and was retired in the Thames back in the 70's to serve as a museum ship. It was an interesting walk around, but also a long one with soooo many steps up and down. By the time we were finished, it felt like I'd done a full leg day at the gym! I would recommend going to explore HMS Belfast as there's plenty to see and in this sunny weather, the top deck is lovely and very welcoming as you resurface after your long tour around the ship. Obviously, due to the steps, it's not disabled friendly, nor is it good for those that aren't confident on their feet or have a phobia of stairs. They also offer free audio guides to give you more information and insights as you walk around the ship, and they're also handy for guiding you around the massive museum.

As our tour came to an end and the afternoon rolled on, we wondered what to get up to next. Matthew had spare Tesco Clubcard points so we thought as it was a nice day that we would venture down to Greenwich and get the river cruise boat back to Westminster before heading back to the apartment. Before we could get as far as the tube station to head over to Greenwich, we were side tracked by food. Matthew had finally got his appetite back and whenever I see the prospect of food, I don't need to be asked twice. So, there we were sat outside Cafe Rouge browsing their lunch deal. While I went for garlic soup and steak, Matthew made a brave choice and went for chicken liver pate to start and mussels for main. While this seemed a risky choice given the events of Thursday morning, Matthew ate with confidence.

Full of Cafe Rouge's fare it was time to hop on the tube in time to catch what was now going to be the last boat back to Westminster. River cruise number 2. While it was our second time that week, it was now sunny which made everything look even nicer. Whenever I go to London and visit tourist attractions, especially the river cruise, it always surprises me just how many tourists there are acting like they'd never seen a red bus or a bridge before. I guess I've become somewhat desensitised to it all after visiting so many times- after all I only live an hour away by train.

As we docked up at Westminster and headed back to our apartment for the last time, I found myself thinking over the whole week. From walking through the hot packed streets to find the apartment on Monday, to seeing a turtle poo in other fish's faces on Tuesday, and being arm deep in sick in the early hours of Thursday morning, it had certainly been an eventful week.

The Saturday was mostly taken up by travelling home. It felt good to be back on home turf and away from the heat and the packed nature of Central London. London is a fantastic place where you can see everything from the sublime to the ridiculous, but for an anxiety ridden person like me and a sensitive stomached Matthew it can be quite intense. Not to mention we're naturally introverted people.

So, that brings me to the end of 'A Mulie Week in London'! I hope you've enjoyed reading it as much as I did recollecting it. I will be back for the second story in the Week of June-ness very soon so stay tuned for that.

Bye bye for now! And hey, it's Friday tomorrow!!
