It's pancake day everyone! Happy pancake day!
Now while some of you are amazing pancake makers, flipping your creations to dizzying heights, the rest of us (me included) are a flop when it comes to pancake making. There are plenty of guides and recipes out there for the "perfect pancakes" but what about the imperfect pancakes- the one's that boast nothing more than that signature 'homemade' look? Well scour the internet no more, cos here it is...
My pancakes....thank goodness they didn't taste how they looked! |
1. The batter is wrong
Eggs, self raising flour (..or was it plain flour?), milk (a splash....oops! There goes half a pint!) No matter how many recipes you read, sometimes your pancake batter can have a mind of its own and come out completely wrong. Too thick and your pancake will be too stodgy (uh-hmm), too thin and it may burn! And getting the right balance? Well, that may just require a miracle!2. Your flip is a flop
Once you have your batter in the pan cooking up a storm, it's soon time to flip it. The big event. The results of which can cause humiliation or elation. For me, it was pure humiliation as my bold manoeuvre ended up with the limp, half cooked batter folding itself in half and finishing off flopped sideways in the pan looking rather sorry for itself. It started off so well too, it was a promising start that ended in a crushing defeat. The moral of this story is that if you're going to brave the flip, flip with confidence.
3. You've made too much batter
Maybe this is just me? You make what you think will be just enough batter to serve the right amount of people but then while you're cooking you realise you are in fact swimming in pancake batter- enough to last until next pancake day! The solution to this situation would be quite simple on paper- get more people over, but for me, home alone while everyone else was busy, that was difficult. So I carried on making over ambitious, thicker than normal pancakes that I would never stand a chance of eating. Moral of this story is make one pancake at a time if you're making them at home.....alone.
4. Too much topping
This mistake is one that many people end up making but never actually own up to. The results are overly sweet sickly pancakes that require persistence to eat. Worse still, you can't even take back the ingredients you lathered on either, meaning you have to go with it, regretting it with every mouthful. Or, on the flip side (ahhhh, pancake pun!) you end up making a topping's cocktail that is an absolute revelation to your taste buds and is worthy of it's own hashtag.
So, there you go. A list of pancake fails, or if you're looking on the bright side, a list of factors that contribute to that signature 'homemade' pancake! I failed miserably with mine but they were still tasty with Nutella on top. I hope you've all had fun making pancakes today and that you had much better luck than I did with mine!
