Evening guys,
Sorry I'm a bit late blogging this week, however I'm here and I'm going to review the new Marvel film Black Panther, enjoy.
The Avengers is more than just a huge multi-million pound cash cow, it's a huge, marvel-lous universe of sharp-witted, cleverly written characters, and Black Panther is another action packed film that adds a bit of a grown up edge to the Marvel series.
Following on from Captain America: Civil War (which, let's be honest was just an Avengers film with a Captain America twist on it), Black Panther sees Prince T'Challa after the disastrous events of Civil War, return to his home Wakanda to take his fathers place on the throne. With great power comes great responsibility and soon enough he finds himself torn between being the traditional king of Wakanda like this father and those before him, and the realisation that the world is changing fast and Wakanda's technological riches cannot stay a secret forever.
Enter Ulysses Klaue, a psychotic bad guy who has his hands (or should I say arms) full of vibranium and he knows exactly where it came from, the whole story with Wakanda and theatens to be an unstoppable force in exposing Wakanda's secrets. In his entourage is also another Wakanda expert in the form of an ex US military operative who, it turns out later on in the film, to have quite the connection to Wakanda and it's traditions.
In typical Marvel fashion, while there are serious action packed scene's, there's some great wit laced in there to spice things up. The scene's with T'Challa and his sister are great to watch; the banter and the gadgets serve to add a bit of a Bond feel to it- go, go gadget Panther suit! While on the subject of the suit, it doesn't fail to impress as it's able to store kinetic energy during his epic battles, and deploy itself from his traditional African necklace. All this and his aptly named 'sneakers' mean he's all suited and booted for the mission ahead: to stop the culture, traditions and people of Wakanda falling to the wayside.
At this point, Klaue's sidekick, named Killmonger has taken over the kingdom of Wakanda after winning in a violent challenge against Prince T'Challa. His reign soon proves problematic and T'Challa has to face the disastrous actions of his father in a battle that pitches a villain riddled with bitterness, against a very conflicted hero. It's these emotive layers of the characters that creates a much more grown up Marvel film and one that sets it apart. It's not all "hulk smash", it's a war of emotions and tradition.
This chapter of the Marvel franchise has much more of a focus on culture and principles of family and doing what's right versus what tradition dictates.
In conclusion, this film is another great addition to the Marvel family and I know this won't please everyone, but contrary to all the commentary about it being great because it's a mostly black cast, I enjoyed this film just because it was a good film, regardless of skin colour. There you go, I said it.
This weekend will be fantastically busy and tiring for me and Matthew as we're going to see Franz Ferdinand in London but I will be back next week for all the gossip! Have a great weekend everyone
Psst, go and see Black Panther. This review really doesn't do it much justice.
